It only took one match and a couple of looks at video for Tosha Spain to
realize Brianna Young was the type of player that could help her build a program.
Young, a standout volleyball player
for a Hallsville program that has won 62 matches over the past two seasons, signed a national letter-of-intent with Trinity
Valley Community College on Tuesday. Trinity Valley, located in Athens, will begin its first season of volleyball in 2010.
The Lady Cardinals will compete in the Region XIV Conference's District L.
Spain was the head coach
at Athens when Athens and Hallsville participated in the Tyler Tournament back in August.
''Unfortunately, we
played her (Young) and Hallsville,'' Spain said with a laugh on Tuesday. ''After that, I saw some video on
her. She's very athletic, and the offense I want to run at Trinity Valley is a quick offense. She's quick and smart,
and I just think she'll be a good fit for our offense.''
Young recorded 191 kills and 103 blocks as a junior
for the Ladycats and had 114 blocks and 178 kills as a senior. She was named the top blocker in District 13-4A after helping
lead Hallsville to a 33-8 finish. The Ladycats were 29-15 in 2008.
''I feel very fortunate to have coached Brianna,''
Hallsville head coach Cheryl Bell said. ''She has so much athletic potential, and I think she's going to be a
great player at the next level.''
Bell said Young will be a perfect fit for Trinity Valley. ...and the other
way around.
''It's a great place for Brianna,'' Bell said. ''She's a little bit shy.
Going to a new program, all of the kids can come in together and for a family atmosphere. I know she'll do well at Trinity
Valley.''
Trinity Valley will compete in Region XIV Conference's District L along with Panola, Tyler, Blinn,
Navarro and Lon Morris. Panola advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament a year ago.
